Born in 1924, Kerala. Subramanyan studied at Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan between 1944-48 under the guidance of Nandalal Bose, Binode Behari Mukherjee and Ramkinkar Baij. He later studied at Slade School of Art, London on the British Council Research Scholarship during 1955-56. He received the John D. Rockefeller III Fund Fellowship in 1966. He was appointed Fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1985 and the Christensen Fellow at St. Catherine�s College, Oxford, U.K. in 1987-88. After serving as the Dean at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda in 1989 he was appointed Professor Emeritus at Santiniketan. In 1976 he visited General Assembly of the World Crafts Council as Member Delegate in Mexico. The Government of India honoured him with a Padma Shri in 1975; he received the Kalidas Samman in 1981 and the Shiromani Kala Puraskar in 1994. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions and in many major Biennales, including the Sao Paulo Biennale, Brazil, 1961 & 1971; the Tokyo Biennale, Japan, 1964; and the Menton Biennale, France, 1976. He has also held exhibition in Takaoka Municipal Museum of Art & Meguro Museum of Art, Japan, 1988; Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, London, 1982 & 1988. In 2003, a retrospective of his work was held at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi and Mumbai. He lives and works in Baroda, Gujarat.
